California State University—Long Beach is a public institution that was founded in 1949. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 31,447, its setting is urban, and the campus size is 322 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. California State University—Long Beach's ranking in the 2020 edition of Best Colleges is Regional Universities West, #20.

With its location overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the California State University—Long Beach, or CSULB or Long Beach State as it is known, offers students a mix of academic and outdoor life. All freshmen, unless they commute from a parent’s home, are required to live on campus. Los Angeles County, California, officially the County of Los Angeles, is the most populous county in the United States, with more than ten million inhabitants as of 2018. It is the largest non–state-level government entity in the United States. Its population is greater than that of 41 individual U.S. states. It has the third-largest metropolitan economy in the world, with a Nominal GDP of more than $700 billion. It has 88 incorporated cities and many unincorporated areas and, at 4,083 square miles (10,570 km2), it is larger than the combined areas of Delaware and Rhode Island. The county is home to more than one-quarter of California residents and is one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the United States. Long Beach is a city in the U.S. state of California located within the Los Angeles metropolitan area. It is the 43rd most populous city in the United States with a population of 462,257 in 2010. A charter city, Long Beach is the 7th most populous city in California. Incorporated in 1897, Long Beach lies in Southern California in southern Los Angeles County. Long Beach is approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of downtown Los Angeles, and is part of the Gateway Cities region. The Port of Long Beach is the second busiest container port in the United States and is among the world's largest shipping ports. The city is over an oilfield with minor wells both directly beneath the city as well as offshore. The city is known for its waterfront attractions, including the permanently docked RMS Queen Mary and the Aquarium of the Pacific. Long Beach also hosts the Grand Prix of Long Beach, currently an IndyCar race and the Long Beach Pride Festival and Parade. The California State University, Long Beach, one of the largest universities in California by enrollment, is located in the city.
